1985 'Money for Nothing' by Dire Straits peaked at No.4 on the UK singles chart. Notable for its groundbreaking music video and a cameo appearance by Sting singing the song's falsetto introduction and backing chorus, "I want my MTV" who also co-wrote the song with Mark Knopfler. The video was also the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network started on 1 August 1987.

2008 US singer-songwriter Isaac Hayes died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 65. Police were called to his home after his wife found him unconscious. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Hayes won an Oscar for the 1971 hit Theme From Shaft as was also known as the voice of Chef from the hit cartoon show, South Park. He was married four times and had 12 children.

1940 Bobby Hatfield (of The Righteous Brothers) is born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

1943 Singer-songwriter James Griffin (of Bread) is born Cincinnati, Ohio.

1943 Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes is born Veronica Yvette Bennett in New York City, New York.

1947 Jethro Tull leader Ian Anderson is born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.

1961 Jon Farriss (drummer for INXS) is born in Perth, Western Australia.

1968, The lineup for day two of the National Jazz & Blues Festival was Alan Haven, Deep Purple, Ginger Baker, Jeff Beck Group, Joe Cocker, Mike Westbrook, Ronnie Scott, T. Rex, Ten Years After, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Don Rendell & Ian Carr Quintet, and The Nice. The festival was held at Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury On Thames, England.

1974, The Allman Brothers Band performed at August Jam at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Charlotte, North Carolina. Also on the bill were Emerson Lake & Palmer, Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas, and the Marshall Tucker Band.

1968 Guitarist Mason Williams tops the Cashbox chart with his own composition, "Classical Gas". Williams, the head writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, would win three Grammy Awards at next year's ceremony and in 1991 be given a Citation of Achievement by the RIAA for over five million broadcast performances.

1943 Saxophonist Denis Payton (of The Dave Clark Five) is born in Walthamstow, North London, England.

1943 Jim Kale (bassist for The Guess Who) is born Michael James Kale in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1950 Eric Braunn (guitarist for Iron Butterfly) is born Rick Davis in Pekin, Illinois.

1964 The Who, temporarily known as the High Numbers, take the stage at Harrow, England's Railway Hotel, but not before lead singer Roger Daltrey is involved in a fistfight with his father-in-law just outside.

2011 Warrant lead singer Jani Lane dies at age 47 after a long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

1967 Small Faces, The Move, Marmalade, Paul Jones, Pink Floyd, Amen Corner, Donovan, Zoot Money, Cream, Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown all appeared at this years UK Reading festival. An advance 3 day ticket cost £2. Arthur Brown's trademark flaming helmet burnt out of control and organiser Harold Pendleton's father-in-law had to douse the flames with a pint of beer.


1979 Led Zeppelin played their last ever UK show when they appeared at Knebworth House, England. The set list included: The Song Remains The Same, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer/Black Mountainside, Kashmir, Trampled Under Foot, Sick Again, Achilles' Last Stand, In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven Rock And Roll, Whole Lotta Love and Communication Breakdown.

2020 Trini Lopez, the singer, guitarist and actor who scored a Billboard #3 hit in 1963 with "If I Had A Hammer", passed away at the age of 83 from complications caused by the COVID-19 virus. Along with three other Top 40 hits, he also starred in the 1967 World War II film The Dirty Dozen alongside Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, Lee Marvin, Donald Sutherland and Telly Savalas. After his hit records and acting roles tailed off, he continued to release albums and perform regularly, mostly in Las Vegas and his adopted home of Palm Springs.

1971 Lefty Baker, the guitarist who joined Spanky And Our Gang in time to record their 1968, #17 hit "Like To Get To Know You", died of cirrhosis of the liver about a year after he left the band. He was 29.
