2024 While parts of North America experienced a total, solar eclipse, Bonnie Tyler's 1983 hit, "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" saw its streaming numbers jump by 480% from the previous week. On the day of the event, streams totaled 1.8 million, and actual sales of the song boosted it to the top of the iTunes chart.

1968: The Band released “The Weight,” backed with “I Shall Be Released,” from their debut studio album, Music from Big Pink. The single became one of the group’s best known songs as well as a significant influence on American popular music.

1969: The iconic cover photo for the Beatles’ last-recorded album, Abbey Road, was taken by photographer Iain Macmillan, with the group’s four members walking across a zebra crossing outside EMI’s studios in London. Macmillan had been a friend of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and McCartney had provided him with a sketch of his idea for the cover. A policeman held up traffic while the Beatles were photographed six times. Looking at the negatives, Paul McCartney chose the fifth, as it was the only one in which all four Beatles were walking in time. It also satisfied the group’s desire for the world to see them walking away from the recording studios where they had spent much of the last seven years.

1968 Deep Purple, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Ten Years After, The Nice, Ginger Baker, Traffic, John Mayall, Spencer Davis, Taste, Jerry Lee Lewis and Arthur Brown all appeared at the three day National Jazz & Blues Festival, Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury On Thames, England.

1995 Jerry Garcia guitarist and singer from the Grateful Dead died from a heart attack at the Serenity Knolls rehabilitation clinic in San Francisco aged 53. Garcia co-founded the New Riders of the Purple Sage and also released several solo albums. He was well known for his distinctive guitar playing and was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarist's of All Time"

1986 Queen played their last live concert with Freddie Mercury at the Knebworth Park Festival in England. An audience of 120,000 heard them close out with "We Will Rock You"/"We Are The Champions" and "God Save The Queen." Mercury, who died in 1991 of complications related to AIDS, is considered one of the greatest performers in the history of rock.

1980, AC/DC scored their first number one album with Back In Black. It was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who died on February 19, 1980 at the age of 33, and was dedicated to him. Scott, passed out after a night of heavy drinking in a London and was left to sleep in a car owned by an acquaintance. The album has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide to date, making it the second highest selling album of all time, and the best selling hard rock or heavy metal album, as well as the best selling album ever released by a band.

2023, Canadian musician Robbie Robertson died after a lengthy illness. He is best known for his work as lead guitarist for Bob Dylan in the mid-late 1960s and early-mid 1970s, as guitarist and songwriter with the Band from their inception until 1978, and for his career as a solo recording artist.
