1945 Bassist/songwriter Kerry Chater (of Gary Puckett & the Union Gap) is born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

1951 Pete Way of UFO is born in Enfield, North London.

1952 Bass guitarist/vocalist Andy Fraser (of Free) is born in Paddington, London, England.

1958 Bruce Dickinson (lead vocalist for Iron Maiden) is born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England.

1981 The animated sci-fi film Heavy Metal is released. Although it shares its name with the hard-rock genre, the film isn't intended to have anything to do with music, but instead is an anthology of various stories from the comic magazine Heavy Metal. Almost as an afterthought, an all-star soundtrack is added, featuring songs by Sammy Hagar, Devo, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Journey, and Black Sabbath, to name a few.

Today in 1976, Elton John and Kiki Dee were at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," giving Elton his sixth U.S. No. 1. The song was written by Elton John with Bernie Taupin under the pseudonyms "Ann Orson" and "Carte Blanche", which was apparently a pun on the expression "an horse and cart, blanche". Fun fact: In 1977, John guest starred on The Muppet Show and performed the track with Miss Piggy.

1961 David Howell Evans, aka The Edge, is 62. The Irish guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter was born in Barking, England but moved to Dublin, Ireland as a child, where he would eventually form U2 with his school friends in 1976. The Edge's distinctive guitar sound, characterized by the use of delay and echo effects, has become one of the defining elements of U2's music. The Edge has been instrumental in creating the band’s impressive most iconic work, such as "The Joshua Tree" (1987) and "Achtung Baby" (1991), among others.
