1941 Space rock musician Dave Brock (of Hawkwind) is born in Isleworth, Middlesex, England.

1942 Soul superstar Isaac Hayes is born in Covington, Tennessee.

1947 Trombonist James Pankow (of Chicago) is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1948 Robert Plant is born in West Bromwich, West Midlands, England. Best known at Led Zeppelin's lead singer, he wins the Album of the Year Grammy for Raising Sand, his 2007 collaboration with Alison Krauss.

1949 Bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy) is born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.

1966 Pantera guitarist Darrell Abbott, aka Dimebag Darrell, is born in Ennis, Texas.

1970 Nu-metal pioneer Fred Durst (frontman for Limp Bizkit) is born in Gastonia, North Carolina.

1973 The Rolling Stones release "Angie."

2020 Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali dies of pancreatic cancer at 68.

1988 Iron Maiden, Kiss, David Lee Roth, Megadeth, Guns N' Roses and Helloween all appeared at this year's 'Monsters Of Rock' Festival, Castle Donington, England. Two rock fans died while 'slam dancing' as Guns N' Roses played.

1991 The movie Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man debuted in US theatres. The film featured a song called "The Bigger They Come" by Peter Frampton and Steve Marriott, which was their first work together since their days in Humble Pie, 20 years earlier.

1941 Keyboardist Tom Coster (of Santana) is born in Detroit, Michigan. He composed "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)" with Carlos Santana.

1947 Carl Giammarese (lead vocalist/guitarist for The Buckinghams) is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1952 Rock bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (of Deep Purple) is born in Cannock, Staffordshire, England. He has a brief stint as Black Sabbath's frontman in the mid-'80s.

1954 Drummer Steve Smith (of Focus and Journey) is born in Whitman, Massachusetts.

2005 Synthesizer pioneer Robert A. Moog died at age 71 at his home in Asheville, N.C., due to complications from brain cancer. The Moog synthesizer was made popular by '70s progressive rock bands like Manfred Mann, Yes, Pink Floyd and Emerson, Lake and Palmer; The Beatles used a Moog synthesizer on Abbey Road and a Moog was used to create the eerie sounds on the soundtrack to the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange.

1971 Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, Hawkwind, Duster Bennett, Brewers Droop, Indian Summer, Graphite, (and second from the bottom on the bill) Queen all appeared at the Tregye Festival Truro, Cornwall, England.

1976 The Rolling Stones, 10CC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Todd Rundgren's Utopia and Hot Tuna all appeared at The Knebworth Festival, Hertfordshire, England, tickets £4.50.

1983 Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone had a four-hour brain surgery operation, after being found unconscious in a New York Street where he had been involved in a fight.

2021 Don Everly, the surviving member of the rock 'n' roll duo The Everly Brothers, died at the age of 84. Everly and his brother, Phil, had worldwidehits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including 'Bye Bye Love' and 'All I Have To Do Is Dream'. They were known for their close harmonies, and influenced groups like The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. The Beatles based the vocal arrangement of 'Please Please Me' on The Everly's - hit 'Cathy's Clown'.
