I was born in 1977 and just a quick glance of 1977 on Wikipedia made me realise just how many great albums came out that year. Too many to mention in fact, but here's some of my faves from that year (only studio albums)...

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors
ZZ Top - Tejas
The Runaways - Queens of Noise
Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood
Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
Pink Floyd - Animals
38 Special - 38 Special
Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation

Judus Priest were no longer the band I remembered on Stained Class, although there are probably fans here. Jazz marked the beginning of the end of Queen for me. It was okay, but the next album The Game edged towards disco (Another One Bites the Dust). I came to Eno's Ambient albums as a fan of Roxy Music and his earlier solo albums, but I was disappointed. This was still the peak period for punk rock and disco in the UK and rock music was suffering as a result in my opinon. Boston, Foreigner, The Who, Rush, The Police and Gerry Rafferty released good albums in 1978.

Thanks for your perspective, Big Ears. I should probably listen to British Steel before I go near Stained Class anyway.

I liked the first two albums, Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny which had material written by the original vocalist Al Atkins, and parts of Sin After Sin which they recorded for CBS. After this, they became more commercial (Liiving After Midnight, United, Hot Rockin') and I lost interest.

My thoughts exactly. The first album of theirs I heard was Sad Wings and I think Stained Class was their current album that year. I personally like everything up till the live album but I can see why anyone would consider Stained Class serious decline. Songs like Beyond the Realms of Death and Saints in Hell do plenty to redeem it as far as I'm concerned.

I like some of the albums that follow Stained Class OK but they are as depressing to me as post Hemispheres Rush albums (ie ok or even good albums but not good albums by that band). Screaming for Vengeance at first seemed like it might be a comeback album but the next slab after that one proved that it was not.
