1977 Steve Perry makes his first concert appearance with Journey at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. He would lead them to 17 Billboard Top 40 entries over the next ten years.

2022 Jerry Lee Lewis, the legendary Rock 'n' Roll pioneer, passed away at the age of 87. After a string of six Billboard Top 40 hits, which included "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On" (#3), "Great Balls Of Fire" (#2) and "Breathless" (#7), he also enjoyed a long streak of Country And Western hits. In 1986, along with Elvis and Chuck Berry, he made the inaugural class of inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and joined the Country Hall of Fame in 2022.

1936 Charlie Daniels is born Charles Edward Daniels in Wilmington, North Carolina.

1948 Rickie Lee Reynolds (guitarist for Black Oak Arkansas) is born in Manilan, Arkansas.

1984 Wells Kelly (drummer, keyboardist for Orleans), age 34, dies of asphyxiation after a night of hard partying while on tour with Meat Loaf in London, England.

2014 At their regular haunt - the Beacon Theater in New York City - The Allman Brothers Band play their final show, a four-hour set that goes past midnight, ending on the anniversary of Duane Allman's death.

This Day In Rock History: October 28th


2008 A statue honoring AC/DC’s Bon Scott was unveiled at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour in Western Australia. Although born in Scotland, Scott grew up in Fremantle after his family emigrated to Australia in 1952. Bon started out his newfound Australian life in Melbourne, his family lived in the suburb of Sunshine for four years before moving to Fremantle. Scott died on February 20, 1980. He is buried in Fremantle cemetery.

1997 - R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry announced that he was departing the band after 17 years. Born in Duluth, Minn., Berry lives and works as a farmer in Georgia, mostly staying out of the limelight.

1971 Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle on a Macon, Georgia street while trying to swerve to avoid a tractor-trailer and was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle bounced into the air, landed on Allman and skidded another 90 feet with Allman pinned underneath. He was three weeks shy of his 25th birthday.

2018 Singer, songwriter and musician James Edwin Farrar died due to heart failure, at the age of 67. He was the original lead singer of the Raw Energy band and the second lead singer of the American Southern Rock band Molly Hatchet from 1980 to 1982, and in more recent years, Gator Country.

1944 Denny Laine is born Brian Hines on a boat off the Jersey coast. He becomes a founding member of both The Moody Blues and Wings.

1944 Rob Van Leeuwen (guitarist for Shocking Blue) is born in The Hague, Netherlands

1946 Rock guitarist Peter Green (of Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers) is born in Bethnal Green, London, England.

1955 Kevin DuBrow (lead singer of Quiet Riot) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1973 John Lennon releases "Mind Games" and the LP of the same name in the US.

1978 Rush's Hemispheres hits stores. The album is ambitious even by Rush standards, and the work put into recording it nearly gives the band members nervous breakdowns.

This Day In Rock History: October 29th


1984 Deep Purple release their eleventh studio album, "Perfect Strangers", their first LP in nine years. The effort contains the single "Knocking at Your Back Door". (US #61, UK #65).

2000 William Martin, drummer with Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs, suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 56.
