1970 Janis Joplin's ashes were scattered at Stinson Beach in Marin County, California. The singer had been found dead on the floor beside her bed at the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood California on 4th Oct. The official cause of death was an overdose of heroin, possibly combined with the effects of alcohol.

1947 Sammy Hagar is born in Salinas, California. He replaces David Lee Roth as lead singer of Van Halen from 1985-1996, before returning in 2004.

1948 John Ford Coley, folk rock/country singer and instrumentalist, is born in Dallas, Texas.

2008 Ringo Starr announced that he no longer has time to respond to fan mail or to sign autographs. In a video message on his website, Starr asked fans not to send him any mail at all. "No more fan mail and no objects to be signed. Nothing," he said. "Peace and love." Two days later, following a backlash from fans, Starr explained that his announcement was "in direct response to an inordinate amount of items which have recently appeared for sale on eBay." Starr was also concerned that all the correspondence amounted to "a waste of paper, and we all should be mindful of our carbon footprint."

2007 Tom Dawes, bassist for The Cyrkle on their two 1966 Billboard Top 20 hits, "Red Rubber Ball" and "Turn Down Day", died following complications from heart surgery. He was 64.

2016 Bob Dylan became the first songwriter in history to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. The 75-year-old music legend was awarded the prize "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition", according to Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.

2019 Steve Cash, a founding member and harmonica player for the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, passed away at the age of 73 after an extended illness. The band's biggest hit was "Jackie Blue", which reached number three on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1975.

Today in 1941, singer-songwriter Paul Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey. As half of the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, Simon created some of the most cherished songs in pop music history, including “Mrs. Robinson,” “America,” “The Sound of Silence,” and more. He set out on a solo career in the 1970s and continued a successful run highlighted by 1986’s Graceland, which was named Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 1987 and has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide.

1992 Prince releases an album with a symbol on the cover that later becomes his name.
