1983 Red Hot Chili Peppers take the stage at the Kit Kat Club in Hollywood wearing nothing but socks - not on their feet.

1968, At an impromptu gathering at Joni Mitchell’s house in Lookout Mountain, Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash played together for the very first time.

1970, The three day Atlanta Pop Festival took place, featuring The Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Jethro Tull, Johnny Winter, Mountain, Procol Harum and Rare Earth. Over 200,000 music fans attended the festival.

1972 - Blues singer and guitarist Mississippi Fred McDowell died of cancer at age 68. The Rolling Stones covered his "You Got To Move" on Sticky Fingers. Fun fact: McDowell coached Bonnie Raitt on slide guitar technique.

1986 - U2 crew member Greg Carroll died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin while running an errand for Bono. The song "One Tree Hill" Joshua Tree is dedicated to Carroll.

1940 Dave Rowberry (keyboardist for The Animals) is born in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, England.

1943 Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitarist, harmonica player for Canned Heat) is born in Arlington, Massachusetts.

1948 Jeremy Spencer (guitarist, pianist for Fleetwood Mac) is born in Hartlepool, County Durham, England.

1952 John Waite (lead vocalist, bass guitarist of The Babys and lead vocalist of Bad English) is born in Lancaster, Lancashire, England.

1958 Kirk Pengilly (guitarist for INXS) is born in Kew, Victoria, Australia.

1966 The Lovin' Spoonful release "Summer In The City."

1972 William Goldsmith (drummer for Foo Fighters) is born in Seattle, Washington.

1976 Paul Revere is married during the intermission of his concert at King's Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati on America's bicentennial.

1982 Ozzy Osbourne and his manager, Sharon Arden, get married. She is the daughter of music mogul Don Arden, and a keen businesswoman. The union results in an MTV reality show, Ozzfest, and three children: Aimee, Kelly and Jack.

1978: The first Texxas Jam took place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Aerosmith & Ted Nugent were the headliners on a bill that also included Van Halen, Heart, Journey, Eddie Money, Cheech & Chong & Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. Ted Nugent passed out during his set due to excessive heat.

1969 Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Winter, Delaney and Bonnie, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker, Blood Sweat & Tears, Chuck Berry, Spirit, Chicago and Paul Butterfield all appeared at the two-day Atlanta Pop Festival, Byron, Georgia.

1986 The second Farm Aid benefit concert took place at Manor Downs Racetrack, Manor, Texas. Held to raise money for family farmers in the US, the concerts were organized by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young. Artists who appeared included: Alabama, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Emmylou Harris, Jason & the Scorchers, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Vince Neil and Willie Nelson.

1974: Steely Dan’s Walter Becker and Donald Fagan play their final gig together in Santa Monica, CA. The split occurs even though they have the number four song in the US with “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” and a current Platinum album with “Pretzel Logic”, California. They would not tour again for the next eighteen years.

1943 Robbie Robertson (lead guitarist for The Band) is born Jaime Royal Robertson in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

1950 Michael Monarch (original lead guitarist for Steppenwolf) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1950 Huey Lewis is born Hugh Anthony Cregg III in New York City. He forms Huey Lewis and the News in San Francisco.

1969 The Who release "I'm Free."

1992 Helix guitarist Paul Hackman, age 38, is killed after a concert in Vancouver when the band's van rolls down a 40-foot embankment and throws him from the vehicle.
