1984 Prince released his sixth studio album Purple Rain the first to feature his band the Revolution, and the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. The first two singles from the album, 'When Doves Cry' and 'Let's Go Crazy', topped the US singles charts, and were hits around the world, while the title track went to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

2009 Michael Jackson died at the age of 50, after suffering heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills. The eighth child of the Jackson family, he debuted with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964. Jackson is credited for transforming the music video into an art form and a promotional tool, four of his solo albums are among the world's best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995), while his 1982 Thriller is the world's best-selling record of all time with sales of over 50 million.

1946 Rock multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald (of Foreigner, King Crimson) is born in Osterley, Middlesex, England.

1946 Allen Lanier (keyboardist, rhythm guitarist for Blue Öyster Cult) is born in Long Island, New York.

1954 David Paich (keyboardist for Toto) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1963 George Michael is born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in East Finchley, London, England.

1972 Mike Kroeger (bassist for Nickelback) is born in Hanna, Alberta, Canada.

1975 Frank Zappa's last album with The Mothers of Invention, One Size Fits All, is released.

2009 Sky Saxon (lead singer of The Seeds) dies at age 71 when an untreated infection leads to heart and renal failure.

1990 Nelson release their debut album After the Rain, which sells over 2 million copies thanks to the #1 single "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection." Nelson is the duo of Gunnar and Matthew, the twin sons of Rick Nelson.

1974 Cher divorced Sonny Bono after 10 years of marriage. Four days later, Cher married guitarist Gregg Allman, the couple split 10 days after that, got back together and split again. They did stay married for three years, producing Elijah Blue Allman.

2005 Tickets for a forthcoming Rolling Stones gig at the Hollywood Bowl were set to become the most expensive in rock 'n' roll history. Fans would have to pay up to £249 for a seat - £2 per minute to watch the Stones.

2008 Total Guitar magazine voted Celine Dion’s rendition of the AC/DC track ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ as the world's worst cover version ever. In the best cover versions list, Jimi Hendrix was voted into first place with his version of the Bob Dylan song ‘All Along the Watchtower,’ The Beatles rendition of ‘Twist and Shout’, (first recorded by the Top Notes), was in second place, followed by the Guns N' Roses version of the Wings song ‘Live and Let Die’.

2021 American singer-songwriter Johnny Solinger died one month after he revealed that he was suffering from liver failure. He was 55 years old. He was best known for being the lead vocalist of Skid Row from 1999 to 2015.

1977, Elvis Presley made his last ever live stage appearance when he appeared at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. Presley would die less than two months later. The last two songs he performed were “Hurt” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Before the show Elvis was presented with a plaque commemorating the 2 billionth record to come out of RCA s pressing plant.

1942 Bruce Johnston (of The Beach Boys) is born Benjamin Baldwin in Peoria, Illinois. He is adopted by William and Irene Johnston and grows up in Los Angeles.

1996 The sixth edition of Lollapalooza launches at Longview Lake in Kansas City, Missouri. It is co-headlined by Metallica and Soundgarden.
