1948 Rock drummer Skip Alan (of The Pretty Things, Them) is born in England.

1991 Skid Row release the album S.l.a.v.e To The Grind, the follow-up to their 5-million-selling self-titled debut. It debuts at #1 in America and sells 2 million, but it doesn't have legs: none of the songs catch on with radio or MTV.

1967, Printed in this week’s music weekly Melody Maker’s ad’s pages, “Freaky lead guitarist, bass and drummer wanted for Marc Bolan’s new group. Also any other astral flyers like with car’s amplification and that which never grows in window boxes, phone Wimbledon 0697.” The band who formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex, went on to release four underground folk albums before becoming known as T Rex.

1976 The Who, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Little Feat, Outlaws and Streetwalkers all appeared at Swansea City Football Club, Swansea, Wales, Tickets cost £4 ($7).

1989 The Elvis Presley Autoland Museum opened at Graceland. The museum contained over 30 cars which were owned by Presley including his famous Pink Cadillac, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Stutz Blackhawks, a 1975 Dino Ferrari, a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, and the red MG that Elvis drove in the film Blue Hawaii.

2011 Carl Gardner, the lead singer of The Coasters on their pioneering Rock 'n' Roll hits "Yakety Yak", "Charlie Brown", "Poison Ivy" and "Searchin'" died of congestive heart failure at the age of 83.

1949 John Wetton, frontman for King Crimson and Asia, is born in Derbyshire, England.

1951 Brad Delp (lead vocalist for Boston) is born in Peabody, Massachusetts.

1951 Bun E. Carlos (drummer for Cheap Trick) is born Brad Carlson in Rockford, Illinois.

1977 Blues rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd is born Kenny Wayne Brobst in Shreveport, Louisiana.

2015 - In Gothenburg, Sweden, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) fell off the stage and broke his leg. He had his leg set backstage and returned to perform more songs.

History Highlight:

Today in 1965, The Supremes scored their fifth consecutive U.S. No. 1 single when "Back In My Arms Again" went to the top of the charts, making them the first American group to accomplish this feat. The song was written and produced by Motown's main production team Holland-Dozier-Holland, and features lead vocals by Diana Ross, background vocals by Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson and all instruments by the Funk Brothers.


Also, Today In:


1965 The Rolling Stones released one of the all-time most popular rock tunes, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." The song was first played only on pirate radio stations as its lyrics were considered too sexually suggestive but it was later embraced by radio stations and the world as one of the greatest songs of all time. "Satisfaction" was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2006.

2006 Prince received a Webby Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his "visionary" use of the Internet; Prince was the first major artist to release an entire album, 1997's Crystal Ball, exclusively online.

2018 Legendary Elvis Presley drummer D.J. Fontana died peacefully at his home age 87. Before joining guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black in Presley's backing band the Blue Moon Boys, Dominic Joseph Fontana worked as the house drummer for his hometown of Shreveport's Louisiana Hayride working with the likes of Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Steve Young, Melba Montgomery, Norma Jean, Vassar Clements, Carl Butler and other country artists.
