This Day In Rock History: June 27th

1966 Verve Records releases the debut album by Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention, "Freak Out!" The LP is often cited as one of Rock music's first concept albums, as well as being one of the earliest double disc releases. Although it would only reach #130 on the Billboard 200 chart, it was honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999, and ranked at #246 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2012.

1969 Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Nice, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Ten Years After, Taste, The Liverpool Scene and Chicken Shack all appeared at The Bath Festival of Blues in England, with DJ John Peel. Tickets cost 18/6. The festival proved very popular, selling out all 30,000 tickets in the first week, surprising both the townsfolk and the promoters. The only major problem occurred when the Nice's use of bagpipers caused the stage to collapse.

2021 Former Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton passed away at the age of 74. Lawton joined the band in 1976, replacing original lead singer David Byron just as the band was working on its 10th album, "Firefly".
