1989 Following his death last December 6th at the age of 52, Roy Orbison's album "Mystery Girl" is released on Virgin Records. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Bono and George Harrison all made contributions to the LP, which peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single, "You Got It", gave Orbison his first Billboard Top 10 hit since "(Oh) Pretty Woman" in the Fall of 1964.

2024 Billboard reported that AC/DC's music video "Back in Black" had reached one billion views on YouTube. It was the Australian band's second clip to join the Billion Views club, following their 1990 hit, "Thunderstruck".

1937 Don Everly (of The Everly Brothers) is born Isaac Donald Everly in Brownie, Kentucky. Two years later, brother Phil is born.

1938 Jimmy Carl Black (drummer, vocalist for Mothers of Invention) is born James Carl Inkanish, Jr. in El Paso, Texas.

1949 RCA introduces the 45 RPM record. It's 7 inches wide and plays at a faster speed than the traditional 33-1/3, providing better sound quality. The format takes off, and 45s become known as "singles."

1950 Mike Campbell (lead guitarist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) is born in Panama City, Florida.

1951 Rich Williams (guitarist for Kansas) is born in Topeka, Kansas.

1964 Jani Lane of Warrant ("Cherry Pie") is born in Akron, Ohio.

1969 Patrick Wilson (drummer for Weezer) is born in Buffalo, New York. He starts drum lessons at age 15 after seeing Van Halen in concert.

1975, Pilot were at number one on the UK singles chart with “January,” the Scottish group’s only chart topper. The song was a number one hit in Australia for eight weeks

1995, Richey Edwards guitarist with the Manic Street Preachers vanished leaving no clues to his whereabouts. He left The Embassy Hotel in London at 7am, leaving behind his packed suitcase. His car was found on the Severn Bridge outside Bristol, England sixteen days later. Edwards has never been found, despite constant searching, and in November 2008 he was declared officially dead.

1992 George Michael and Elton John went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me', also a No.1 in the UK. All proceeds from the single went to Aids charities.

1973, Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer injured his hands when his piano rigged to explode as a stunt, detonated prematurely during a concert in San Francisco.

2004, TV network CBS apologised for its broadcast of the American Super Bowl after Janet Jackson was left exposed when Justin Timberlake ripped her top. The pair had been performing a raunchy half-time duet when one of Jackson's breasts was exposed as Timberlake pulled at her top. CBS quickly cut away from the scene but was still flooded with calls from angry viewers about the half-time entertainment, produced by MTV. Timberlake insisted it had been an accident saying "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the half-time performance of the Super Bowl."

1942 Graham Nash is born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. After founding The Hollies in 1962, he leaves in 1968 to make more newsworthy music, which he does with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

1949 Ross Valory, bass player with Journey and the Steve Miller Band, is born in San Francisco.

1959 At the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper play their last show as part of the "Winter Dance Party" tour. Admission: $1.25. The last song of the night: The Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace."

1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd release Gimme Back My Bullets. It's their fourth album, following Nuthin' Fancy and preceding Street Survivors, which is their last release before a fatal plane crash ends the original lineup.
