1963: Janis Joplin performed in San Francisco for the first time at the North Beach coffeehouse.

1986: Dire Straits reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Walk of Life”, their final top ten single in the U.S.

1994 Alice In Chains released Jar of Flies. It is the first EP in music history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the first week sales exceeding 141,000 copies in the United States. The self-produced EP was written and recorded over the course of just one week at the London Bridge Studio in Seattle. The tracks "No Excuses", "I Stay Away" and "Don't Follow" were released as singles to promote the album. Jar of Flies was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1995: Best Recording Package and Best Hard Rock Performance for "I Stay Away".

1958 Gary Tibbs (bass guitarist for Adam & The Ants, Roxy Music) is born in Northwood, London, England.

1971 Grace Slick and Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane welcome a baby girl they name "God." Her name is later changed to "China," and as "China Kantner" she becomes a VJ on MTV.

1985 Prince releases "Take Me With U," the last single from Purple Rain.

1974 Led Zeppelin appeared at the Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, Indiana to over 17,000 fans. The set list included: 'Rock And Roll', 'Over The Hills And Far Away', 'The Song Remains The Same', 'The Rain Song', 'Kashmir', 'The Wanton Song', 'No Quarter', 'Trampled Under Foot', 'Moby D.ick', 'How Many More Times', 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Whole Lotta Love' and 'Black Dog'. Tickets cost $8.50.

1975 The last Sunbury Rock Festival in Victoria Australia was held. The promoters who had made heavy losses only paid Deep Purple. AC/DC were scheduled to play after Deep Purple but a fight started on stage between road crews after Purple's set when they began packing up the lights and PA and denied AC/DC use of them, who then left the festival site without playing at all.

1986 US manager Albert Grossman died of a heart attack while flying on Concorde from New York to London. He managed Bob Dylan (between 1962 and 1970), Peter, Paul and Mary, The Band, Janis Joplin and Todd Rundgren. Grossman built the Bearsville Recording Studio near Woodstock in 1969 and in 1970 he founded Bearsville Records.

1996 The halftime show of Super Bowl XXXI includes performances by The Blues Brothers, James Brown and ZZ Top. All the performers ended the show by performing "Gimme Some Lovin'" together.

2013 The Ohio Players frontman Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner died of unknown causes at the age of 69. He led the group to the top of The Hot 100 with "Fire" in 1974 and "Love Rollercoaster" in 1975.

2023 Atlanta Rhythm Section co-founder and keyboardist Dean Daughtry died of natural causes at the age of 76. The band placed seven songs on the Billboard Top 40 chart between 1974 and 1981, including "So Into You" (#7 in 1977), and "Imaginary Lover" (#7 in 1978).

1948 Laurence "Corky" Laing (drummer for Mountain) is born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

1951 Big Star bass player Andy Hummel is born to former Miss America (1947) Barbara Walker Hummel in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He is raised in Memphis, Tennessee.

1951 David Briggs, who replaces Ric Formosa as lead guitarist for Little River Band, is born in Melbourne, Australia.

1955 Eddie Van Halen is born in Nijmegen, Netherlands. His family eventually settles in Pasadena, California, where he forms Van Halen with his brother, Alex.

1977, former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green was committed to a mental hospital following an incident when he threatened his accountant Clifford Adams with an air rifle when he was trying to deliver a £30,000 royalty check to him.
