JJ Cale was drafted, so he went into the Air Force. He took technical training at the Air Force Training Command in Rantoul, Illinois. Cale's knowledge of mixing and sound recording played an important role in creating the distinctive sound of his studio albums. He didn’t think of himself as a good singer, so he liked the layering effect in music. He was a big fan of Les Paul and Mary Ford.
