Judas Priest "Green Manalishi" is a favorite, but since it's already been said, how about their cover of Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black"?
I also love the cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" by Tricky:
Saw someone else posted a metal cover of the Beatles "I Want You...
Here's another song I've been trying to find since forever. Taped it off the (college) radio around 1984 or so, so it'd have to be before that. I'd describe the sound as post-punk, but not abrasive. Almost pop-y, but a little harsher, more drone / jangle, and sarcastic than regular top-40. I've...
Oh and of course, Flower Travellin' Band who cover the song "Black Sabbath" on their second album, and unleashed this beast, Sartori, on the world in 1971:
Nice find, I hadn't heard of Samurai! The only Japanese proto-metal band I can think of off the top of my head is Speed, Glue & Shinki. I'll have to keep thinking about it, I'm sure I know others, but just not sure when they put out albums.
Shoegaze is a style of alternative rock that features heavy reverb/effects and whispered or buried vocals (also featuring heavy effects/reverb). [edit: called "shoegaze" because the performers often looked down at their feet (and effects pedals) while performing.] Here's a good example...
"Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" is a great song!
Been listening to Nick Cave since The Birthday Party. Here's one of my favorite songs by him (that does remind me of "Nights that Won't Happen"), "Faraway So Close"
Yeah, fairly prog-y I'd say, definitely hear Yes and Procol Harum as well as the band they got compared to a lot, ELP. Their album after this one, Spartacus, is also really good.
Not sure if this qualifies, but I never hear people talk about Triumvirat even tho for awhile it seems they were fairly popular? Never heard a song on the radio or anything tho, mind you I live in the US and I think they were more popular in Europe (they're from Germany).
Personnel on this...
Yup, that's why I was hesitant to say it was British. Also the time period would have be early 80s because I don't think hardcore existed pre-79 or so?
I think the best Christian "rock" music tends to be made by secular artists, for instance Prince's "I Would Die 4 U," Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" or Black Sabbath's "After Forever." I've heard some decent Metal and Death Metal Christian bands though, like Stryper and Vengeance (rising).
Definitely isn't, but I have to wonder if the band I'm looking for didn't get the idea from that song. The song I'm looking for has more abrasive vocals (yes, more abrasive than Rotten's). But the singer DOES sound British.
