Some of you will remember that I am once again rebuilding my iTunes library. This week some of the music included a few box set collections like Have A Nice Decade: The ‘70s Pop Culture Box, and Singers and Songwriters Collection.

Now some things I have always liked about the Have A Nice Decade set from Rhino Records of course, is the segues between some of the songs includes stock audio sound bites of news stories and culture vignettes from the 1970s. I mean the song choices are fun as well and mostly original recordings. Some of the songs in the collection are unique and not found on any other of the compilation discs in my collection.
And the Singers and Songwriters set for instance, the version of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Mr. Bojangles” has an extend intro that I have not been able to find in many other places. The song opens with voice recordings of an old man speaking (maybe the character is supposed to be Bojangles) about his dog and other topics just before the song begins. Also in this collection is a version of Todd Rungren’s “Hello It’s Me” with several false starts. I admit I’m not much of a fan of Rungren but I don’t often come across this version with false starts either. It may be found on a studio album and I have never bothered to look.

Now, the Singers and Songwriters collection does cover the 60s, 70s, and 80s and is a really nice collection of songs from all those decades.
